From the 6th. February till the 15th. August the NRW-Forum Düsseldorf shows a Retrospective of the controverse discussed artist Robert Mapplethorpe.

The in 1946 in New York born artist was one of the precourses of photography as art and stood in one line with Andy Warhol and Patti Smith as the avant-garde of their time. He got famous with homoerotic pictures and his selfportraits. Till the end of the 20th Century his work was, especially in the USA, controvers discussed and there were protests and even boycotts against his pictures which show often sexual practices and sadomasochistic actions.

Now the NRW-Forum Düsseldorf shows a retrospective of his work which includes portraits, selfportraits, homosexuallity, actphotography and his early polaroid pictures.

The assortment of 150 pictures shows pictures of the artist from 1973 till 1988, the year he made his famous selfportrait, careworn of his disease. Mapplethorpe died in March 1989 in Boston of the aftermath of his HIV-Infection.
